Blue spaces: why time spent near water is key to happiness

14th Jun 2022

The warmer days and lighter evenings are on their way and now is the perfect time to get outdoors.

According to mental health charity Mind, spending time in green space can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing. Outdoor exercise such as walking or running, or even just sitting in the park, can have lots of positive effects, including improving your mood, lowering blood pressure and heart rate, and helping you feel more relaxed.

Studies have also suggested that living close to ‘blue spaces’ could make you happier, after being associated with many positive measures of physical and mental wellbeing.

Whilst living by the sea in particular – with its salty air and bracing breezes – can have a therapeutic effect, studies show that living by rivers, lakes or canals can also help people to see improvements in their mood, vitality and mental health.

When choosing a place to live, location is one of the main factors for homebuyers, and proximity to both green and blue spaces and local outdoor activities are all key considerations which can influence a decision between one area and another.

Viola Homes understands the importance of location when buying a new home, and we have a number of new developments in stunning, picturesque locations across the North East and North Yorkshire.

Located in the heart of Stockton-On-Tees, our Old School Gardens development offers three-bedroom homes for sale on a shared ownership basis. The development benefits from excellent transport links to the A1 and A19, and is well served by local buses to Stockton-on-Tees town centre which is approximately five minutes’ drive away, as well as the thriving Teesside Retail Park conveniently located a short 10-minute drive away.

While benefitting from all the essential modern amenities, you’ll also find a centre of activity and a top place to go in the North East for outdoor adventure close by at Tees Barrage, with its stunning river and woodland walks, as well as water rafting, paddleboarding, and bellboating on the river. There are also plenty of green spaces nearby, with the opportunity to enjoy the scenery and wildlife at the nearby Portrack Marsh or Maze Park nature reserves.

Another of our current developments is Mill Meadows, on the edge of the coastal town of Filey. The final phase of this beautifully designed development of 300 two, three, four and five-bedroom homes is progressing well, with all homes in the first release fully reserved. Filey beach has recently beaten many top European seaside resorts in the TripAdvisor ‘Best of the Best’ Awards 2021, and activities on offer include beach pony rides, sailing lessons and deckchair hire for the perfect seaside picnic. Filey’s beautiful five-mile stretch of golden sand beach from Filey Brigg to the Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve received a well-deserved place on the list.

As well as its beautiful coastline, Filey has many green spaces to enjoy, including formal gardens and a family park at Crescent Gardens and Glen Gardens, and the Cleveland Way meeting the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail at Filey Brigg. Living in this great location, close to the sea and surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, you will feel like you’re on holiday all year round.

The stunning ‘Haven’ show home at Mill Meadows is now open for viewings, with our sales team on hand to help make your dreams of owning your ideal home a reality. To find out more about our developments in desirable areas across the North East and North Yorkshire, enquire today.
